Shawn tackles one of his absolute favorite commanders from Modern Horizons 3 and makes the case that Rosheen, Roaring Prophet is being slept on, hard, and is actually a very powerful, fun option that takes Gruul Stompy into some new territory.

What's up, Wizards? It's time for Rule Zero, the show that helps you prepare for the best game of Commander. It is our hope that through our combined 20 plus years experience of playing EDH and cultivating a great play group, tons of great decks, and also trying a lot of outside the box variants and homebrew rules, that we can pass that golden knowledge on to you. Typically in this spot, I'd be asking a co host or a guest to say what has them excited about the next week in Magic, but as we're still working on getting a regular group of co hosts to share this platform, I'll share myself. What has me excited about Magic this week? Well, it is none other than a card that was spoiled just recently. Hug's Grizzly Guardian is X, 2 red, and 2 green for a 5 5 legendary creature badger warrior. It has trample, and when Hug's Grizzly Guardian enters, you exile the top X cards of your library. Until the end of your next turn you may play those cards You may also play an additional land on each of your turns And hugs is just perfect for the build that we're going to present to you today In a segment that I call underplayed commanders These are decks that very few folks are looking at even though I think they should be Today's underplayed commander that we're going to talk about is none other than roshin Roaring Prophet. For two, a red and a green, you get a giant shaman 4 4, a legendary creature. When Roshine Roaring Prophet enters the battlefield, you mill six cards. You may put a card with X in its mana cost from among them into your hand, and then her ability is you tap, reveal any number of cards with X in their mana cost in your hand, and you add colorless, colorless, that's two of those, for each card revealed this way. You may spend this mana only on costs that contain X. Now, if you're listening to the podcast and not watching, it could be a little bit of a word salad, but what Roisin basically does is she comes down very quickly. She only costs four mana. She's a four for herself, but you're rarely going to attack in with her because what you want to be able to do in this deck is you're going to want to haste her and or haste that ability that she has to tap and reveal a number of X cards in your hand and get. twice that many colorless to spend on one of those X cards. But then the more you reveal, the bigger, the mightier, the beefier, those spells are going to get, as you'll see, as we're putting this thing together and I've put this deck together myself and I've already been playtesting it quite a bit at the shop and I've had a blast with it so I can tell you firsthand that it is good and it's super fun to play. So let's start talking about the cards that really make Roshin tick. So allow me to introduce you to Roshine in terms of the broader scope of EDH. Right now at the time of recording, there are 333 decks for her on EDHREC. And to put that in perspective, she's the 1000th, 525th most popular commander on the site. And that's really down low. I mean, she's like deep on the third or fourth page of Gruul generals. And even behind a card I've literally never even heard of. The space family goblinson, which I didn't even know that was a deck But apparently it has almost twice as many decks as roshin does so we really need to Start, I think, as an EDH community embracing some of these lesser played commanders, because I think they've given us a real gem here, and we got distracted by Spaghetti Monsters, man, in Modern Horizons 3, because this General Roshine is super fun. Let's talk about the play pattern and why she is fun. First off, X spells. It's not the type of card that many people get to run in EDH, outside of maybe a Villainous Wealth or maybe a Genesis Wave, if that's something that people still do, but X Spells are super fun, particularly if you're making four. 820 mana with Roshin to cast those spells as our golden elder gods intended and that is huge The way we do that is through a couple tricks First off we're going to be tapping and untapping Roshin to tap her again So you're not just like revealing those cards once you may be revealing 3x Spells in your hand or 4x spells in your hand twice potentially even three times So let's talk about how we do that Here are three of my favorite ways to do it. You can find more of these type of effects if you do your own searches through Scryfall, that kind of thing. You know, flavor it as you need to. But these are the three kind of untap effects in RedGreen that I enjoy. So here we go. First, Quirion Ranger. A 1 1 elf ranger for 1 green. Return a forest you control to its owner's hand. Colon, untap target creature. only once each turn. So it's a one time untapped. All you have to do is just put a forest back in your hand. And so with Roisin out, you may make an additional, you know, six, eight colorless mana off of just one untapped. And that's pretty powerful when you're casting like a giant Hydra or a giant fireball, like the cards we're going to talk about the payoffs towards the, the end of the show. Next untapper thousand year elixir. For three colorless, it's an artifact. You may activate abilities of creatures you control as though those creatures had haste. So that's excellent already because it allows her to come into play and then immediately use her tap ability, which we want. The second ability on this artifact is also great with Roisin pay one tap untapped target creature. The last untapper that I want to highlight for you is an instant from visions. Emerald charm. You choose one, you untap target permanent, which is great for her, or you can destroy target non aura enchantment. Occasionally there's something out there, like a necropotence, something like that, that you really need to get rid of. Or, the last mode is target creature loses flying until end of turn. Granted, that That last mode isn't going to come in handy very often, but I enjoy modal spells. They do give you some options out there in a game of EDH, a lot of surprising and crazy things can happen. So having a chance to destroy a major enchantment, or maybe even catch somebody off guard, like they try to fly over you and then you're able to use this to make that flying creature come down to the ground and fight with one of your giant Hydra monsters. It's a possibility. But the main thing is we're untapping Roshin to tap her for more mana, just to make bigger, flashier spells. Speaking of, let's talk about flashy. So, Roshin, the creature type that we're going to focus on in this deck is something called a I'll give you a chance to guess it. It has like nine heads. It usually has X in the casting cost. It is a Hydra. I love Hydras. I've always wanted to build a Hydra deck, so maybe this was my way of doing that, subconsciously. We're going to highlight a few cards that allow those hydras to come in even bigger Because one of the powerful things that red green often does is it puts plus one plus one counters on thing and it puts more Of them than you should be getting so with cards like the ones we're going to highlight here Those hydras are going to get more enormous more threatening super fun first card Unbound flourishing two and a green enchantment whenever you cast a permanent spell with a mana cost that contains x You Double the value of X. Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell or activate an ability, if that spell's mana cost or that ability's activation cost contains X, copy that spell or ability. You may choose new targets for the copy. This is one of the most powerful and broken cards in the entire deck. So this is our opportunity to spend a little bit to get a lot of bit unbound flourishing I know it's like 15 bucks and it came out in modern horizons 1 and it's only had a single reprint on the list I think this card is so good. Let's imagine for a second if we will imagine casting two fireballs imagine A goldvayne hydra that comes out with like 40 counters on it and is hasted and has trample. Because that is not outside of the realm of possibility when you have this thing on the table and you're tapping and untapping Roshin. Like this deck can hit you hard, real hard. So. Get excited. I can't even contain my excitement how much fun I have playing this deck. The next card we're going to highlight is a little more stale bread style, but it's still very good. Branching Evolution. Two and a green, an enchantment. If one or more plus one plus one counters would be put on a creature you control, twice that many plus one plus one counters are put on instead. Very good for hydras. I don't need to talk about it that much. Next, Hardened Scales. Got a recent reprint. I think both of these cards did, so they're both very cost effective these days. Hardened scales as one green mana enchantment. If one or more plus one plus one counters will be put on a creature you control, that many plus one plus one counter is put on instead. So it just adds an additional plus one plus one counter. It doesn't double like the branching evolution does. Either way, I'll take a little bit of value on every single creature we play. Sounds great. So, let's talk about some of the deck's hidden treasures next. Things you might not think of, or you may have never even seen in play before. They get to have a home in Roshin. Hidden treasures. Let's talk about the first one. It's Wildest Dreams. X, X, and green for a sorcery. Return X target cards from your graveyard to your hand. Exile Wildest Dreams. You know what Roshin does? She mills you. And sometimes you're going to want those cards back in hand. Yes, you will get one of the X spells that she mills and you'll probably, if you build your deck with enough X spells, like you should, you should at least hit one every time she mills you on average. Sometimes you'll hit a few more though, and you need that card back. This is a way to get back a whole bunch of different cards from your graveyard and kind of refill your whole hand, which is sweet. So after you cast this, you exile, uh, Wildest dreams, but it returns X target cards from your graveyard to your hand, like I said, so not a complicated spell but great in this deck. Next is Enshrined Memories, X and a green, Sorcery, reveal the top X cards of your library and Put all creature cards reeled this way into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order If you need some of those hydras and you need them fast This is a great way to try and dig dig dig until you get to them and it's cool flavor wise and it has You know dosing the falling leaf on it, which is a character from the old kamigawa block So you'll get some kudos maybe for like your hipster pick here reap the past Is X and a red and a green and this is the next sorcery spell we can run in this Roshin deck This returns X cards at random from your graveyard to your hand. Then you X I'll reap the pass So it's like wildest dreams except that it only costs one X instead of two So you have a chance of getting many more back either way. I think you can run both Because Roshin's going to mill you, you're going to lose stuff through combat, etc, etc. The last card I want to highlight is something that both does damage and also pulls things back from your graveyard. This is World Soul's Rage. X, a green, and a red, for a sorcery. World Soul's Rage deals X damage to any target. Put up two X lands from your hand and or graveyard onto the battlefield tapped. Excellent card in this deck. It is an X spell which powers her ability, but it also takes something out. It could potentially take out a player. And you can, like I said, make a ton of X mana, so this could be a win con. But it also, in case it's not the Wincon, finds a lot of those lands that were in the graveyard either from fetches that you'd already used or just because they got milled with her ability and puts them all back onto the battlefield. Very powerful in this deck. The next section I want to talk to you is some of the fun cards that we get to play. I mean, we've been talking about some enablers and some cards that have recursion to them and that kind of thing. But let's talk about some hydras and giant X spells. First off, Goldvayn Hydra. X and a green for a 0 0 creature hydra. It has vigilance, trample, and haste, because of course it has all the keywords. Goldvayn Hydra enters the battlefield with X plus one plus one counters on it, and when Goldvayn Hydra dies, create a number of tapped treasure tokens equal to its power. So even if they kill this thing, it makes your next X spell. So And, like I said earlier, this thing, with certain kind of combinations in the deck, can come out and just be a game ender. Smack somebody in the face for 20, 30, maybe even more damage, out of nowhere. Really sweet. Next kind of X Bell that we're gonna highlight here, something that's very exciting in this deck, it's an oldie but a goodie, is Lifeblood Hydra. Trample. Enters the battlefield with X 1 counters on it. It is excellent. X green, green, green for zero, zero. The special thing about this Hydra is that when it dies, you gain life and draw cards equal to its power. So a green has never had a better card draw engine than this thing in this Roshin deck. Now let's talk about some newer cards, or some more fun and flashy cards really quick. Because honestly, I could gush and gush and go on and on about all the cool cards that we get to play, the things that we don't often see a whole bunch, and EDH. But this one is from the Fallout universe, Rampaging Yao Guai. X, green, green, green. For a creature, Bear Mutant. It is a 2 2, so you could play it for just green, green, green, and have a Bear Mutant. It enters the battlefield with X plus one, plus one counters on it. When it enters the battlefield, destroy any number of target artifacts and or enchantments with total mana value X or less. So if you pump this thing up to like, say, Well, you're getting to destroy 10 mana value worth of artifacts or enchantments on the battlefield when you do so. And one of the last, like, super powerful X cards I want to share with you. And believe me, there are so many more. So if you get a chance, go check out the deck list on the Moxfield page that we've posted the link to in the show notes. Because I would love to just talk about them all, but we're going to try and keep this video slash podcast about 20 minutes worth. So the last one I want to share is crackle with power. It is X, X, X, red, red sorcery. Now listen to this part cause it gets a little strange in the wording, but it is going to do what you think it's going to do in case you haven't had the chance to play with this thing. Crackle with power deals five times X damage to each of up to X targets. So let's say for instance with Roshin, it's not too hard to make eight, 10, sometimes even 20 if you're untapping Roshin mana that you can spend on an X spell. If you were to say, put five, five, five, so 15 total and then red, red into the cost crackle would power. would deal 25 damage to five different targets for 125 damage total. And that's not even that hard. 15 mana with a Roshan on the table as like maybe turn seven, turn eight spell to try and end things. It is not hard to get there. And it's, I mean, it's as powerful as it sounds. I hope it does sound powerful because when I played this thing, it is, It is game ending. That is what this card is for in the deck. It's sad that you have to reveal it, but if you're really worried about that, Well, then you can start running some things like red elemental blast or tibalt's trickery or whatever in this deck Depending on your meta, you know, but oh, it's so much fun I just love casting these big bomb spells. I don't know about you all. Next up, we're going to talk about some weird little hidden synergies. They're not super hidden for the people who've been playing this game for a long time, but Roshin's ability doesn't just work with X spells or X creatures, it works with X activated abilities, which gets super spicy with the next two cards. The first of two lands that we're going to talk about is Kessig Wolf Run. You can tap it to add a Kololos. Or, you can pay X, red, green, and tap to give target creature plus X plus zero and trample until end of turn. The next land I want to talk about is Lair of the Hydra from the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set. This land, if you control two or more other lands, Lair of the Hydra enters the battlefield tapped. You can tap it to add a green. Or, you can pay x and green, colon, until end of turn, layer of the Hydra becomes an xx green Hydra creature, it is still a land, x can't be zero. So, you can turn this land into a Hydra itself, that is as big as you would like. So even if there's been board wipes on the table and you're really desperate and you don't have a lot of things going on, you All you need is like a Roshin activation or two to turn this thing into a devastating monster that honestly, they won't be able to do a whole lot of stuff to stop unless they have some really targeted instant speed removal. And even then they killed your land. You don't lose a lot in that battle. And you can get it back with some of the cards we talked about earlier. Next, we're going to move on to some spells that can give our creatures protection. Some that are very particular to this style of deck. Hello! How do we keep these monster Hydras on the board? Well, some of them, if they die, things like Lifeblood Hydra or Goldvein Hydra, it's not even that big of a deal. So, ultimately, you're not too scared of that happening, like you often are in this kind of deck. This creature heavy, aggro style deck. But Since they all have plus one plus one counters on them, something you can do is cast Inspiring Call. Two colorless and a green for an instant. Draw a card for each creature you control with a plus one plus one counter on it, and those creatures gain indestructible until end of turn. This won't protect Roshin like a heroic intervention would, however, it does let you draw cards, so it replaces itself. Pretty neat effect, and it only works in decks that have plus one plus one counter strategies in them. The next, We'll also let you draw cards. It is greater good. Two colorless, two green for an enchantment. Sacrifice a creature. Draw cards equal to that sacrifice creature's power, then discard three cards. The average power and toughness you're gonna have on the board in Roshin Hydrodek is something like 10. That's what I've been seeing in my playtesting. It's really not too hard to get there. So if you sacrifice a 10 power creature and you draw 10 cards and then you discard three, what does that leave you with? It leaves you with an entirely new full grip. The amount of cards you can draw on this deck is so intense. It is a lot of fun. Honestly, there are so many out there because they release 350 commanders every year or something like that. And so there's going to be a lot of little hidden gems here and there. And we're going to highlight them because I think those builds are the ones that are much more fun, much more eye catching at the shop when you go to play them. And if we can make them powerful, even better, we're going to try and hit the Venn diagram where both of those spheres are overlapping almost a hundred percent under played overlooked. And awesome.
